A random seating arrangement on a flight led to a collaboration with director Paul Morrissey and roles in two influential cult films. Although his appearance and charisma could easily have carried him toward conventional leading-man fame, he gravitated instead toward unconventional stories and artistic filmmakers who valued his unique energy. This path allowed him to build an unforgettable filmography, rich with bold, daring performances that crossed genres, countries, and cultures.

Across five decades, he became a trusted collaborator to notable directors and delivered memorable performances in acclaimed European and international productions. His appearances in celebrated films by Rainer Werner Fassbinder and later in projects such as Breaking the Waves, Melancholia, and Dogville showcased his versatility and emotional range.
