Dog spotted hiding in bush for 3 days – then neighbors realize why

Posted on June 17, 2025 by ShakeelAhmed

Getting a dog is never just a casual decision — it’s a lifelong promise. You’re signing up to give your time, your heart, and your full commitment to a soul who depends on you for everything. Sadly, not everyone understands that. And when they fail to live up to that promise, it’s the innocent animals who suffer the most.

The officers at Metro Animal Services in Louisville, Kentucky, have seen more than their fair share of heartbreaking situations over the years. And yet, somehow, they keep showing up — month after month, year after year — with the same unwavering dedication to rescuing animals in need.

But when they got a call about a dog hiding deep in the woods for three days straight, even they were taken aback. Not just by what the poor dog had been through — but by how calm and strangely okay he seemed, all things considered.

But to truly understand what happened, we need to go back to last month.

That’s when a call came in to Metro Animal Services in Louisville, Kentucky, about a dog spotted hiding in some bushes for days. As usual, officers were prepared for the worst. But nothing quite readied them for what they actually found.

Tied to a small tree by a worn-out leash, this poor dog had less than a foot of space to move. Beside him sat a single, empty pink plastic bowl — the only sign that someone had left him there.

According to the person who called it in, the dog had shown signs of aggression when approached. But when the responding officer stepped closer, she saw something completely different.

“He was overjoyed to see someone heading his way,” according to the officer at the scene.

With no way to break the leash using bolt cutters, the officer finally reached for a knife and cut the dog free from the tree he’d been trapped against for three days.

And in that moment, the dog responded not with fear, but with pure joy — tail wagging from head to toe and flashing a delightfully goofy, cross-eyed smile that melted hearts.

Once back at the shelter, the dog — now named Dubya — was surprisingly in decent shape.

“He arrived at our shelter in pretty good condition, considering his ordeal,” Stephanie Jackson, public information officer at Metro Animal Services, told The Dodo.

Aside from a few bug bites and needing a thorough bath, Dubya showed remarkable resilience. Staff quickly cleaned him up and gave him a fitting name: Dubya, after former President George W., since he was found in a bush. Estimated to be around 3 years old, Dubya immediately stole the hearts of everyone he met.

“Anyone who meets this guy is going to fall head over heels for him!,” a volunteer wrote after spending time with him and taking him to the groomers.

They’ve described him as “a big goober,” “a bouncy bundle of energy,” and a “loving” pup who thrives on human connection. But his origin story remains a mystery.

Dubya wasn’t microchipped, wasn’t neutered, and no one has come forward to claim him. Online, local residents expressed frustration that it took three days for anyone to call for help.

“We definitely do not recommend waiting [that long],” Jackson said. “If you see a dog tied to something with no one around, we would recommend calling animal control. Even if the dog doesn’t seem in distress, things can change really quickly.”

Now in safe hands, Dubya is being treated for a suspected case of entropion — a condition that causes the lower eyelids to fold inward and produce excess tears.

“It’s unclear whether Dubya has entropion,” Jackson said, “but her team suspects this is the case.”

He’s also on track to be neutered, vaccinated, and microchipped — all essential steps before he’s ready to find his forever family. In the meantime, staff and volunteers can’t get enough of him.

“He is very, very, very goofy and affectionate,” Jackson said.

Dubya also gets along wonderfully with other dogs, making him the perfect fit for a loving family. And sure enough, after winning over everyone at the shelter, Metro Animal Services was thrilled to announce that Dubya has officially been adopted — by a kind man named Mahlon.

Mahlon later shared an update, letting everyone know that Dubya is settling in beautifully: “He’s adjusting to his new home and he loves it!”

What a journey it’s been for this goofy, lovable pup — from abandoned and tied to a tree to finding a forever home filled with love.
