Tragedy in Brazil: Hot Air Balloon Crash Kills 8, Injures 13
On June 21, a peaceful hot air balloon ride turned into a deadly disaster in Praia Grande, southern Brazil. A fire broke out mid-flight on a balloon operated by Sobrevoar Serviços Turísticos, carrying 21 people. Eight were killed and 13 injured.
According to the pilot, who survived, the fire started inside the basket, and he attempted an emergency descent. As the balloon neared the ground, he urged passengers to jump. Thirteen people, including the pilot, managed to leap to safety.
But the balloon, now lighter, rose again before crashing in flames, killing the remaining passengers. Initial investigations suggest the fire may have been caused by a backup burner reigniting. Strong wind conditions and the balloon being pulled by a truck at takeoff may have led to a gas leak.
Among the victims were two couples, a mother and daughter, a figure skater, and an ophthalmologist. Some were reportedly found embracing in their final moments. Eyewitnesses described horrifying scenes, including passengers on fire falling from the sky.
Brazil’s President Lula da Silva and the Governor of Santa Catarina expressed condolences and declared a period of mourning. The national aviation agency has launched a full investigation, and the balloon company has suspended all operations.
This is the second fatal hot air balloon accident in Brazil this month, prompting concerns over safety regulations and ballooning standards.
